Make It
Two ways to build it.
The Simple One
Rim a glass with sea salt if you want it, then fill with ice.
Add 2 oz good-quality tequila, reposado or añejo, and a splash of soda water.
Squeeze about 1 oz fresh lime, lemon, or grapefruit into the glass. At a bar, ask for the juice on the side in a shot glass so you can dose it to taste.
Citrus with a Kick
Rim the glass with Tajín or chilli-lime seasoning.
Fill with ice. One big cube keeps it neat.
Pour in 2 oz good-quality tequila or mezcal.
Add 1–2 slices of fresh orange or grapefruit for a touch of natural sweetness.
Make It Your Own
Smoky: mezcal instead of tequila for an earthy, bold twist
Rim: sea salt, Tajín, or chilli-lime
Citrus: lime, lemon, grapefruit, or orange
Notes
A classic margarita carries around 25g of sugar, and skinny versions usually swap in agave, which is still sugar. This one gets its sweetness from fresh citrus.
Choose a well-crafted tequila. Ask your bartender what small-batch options they have.
Sipping neat or on the rocks? Reposado or añejo has deeper flavour and a smoother finish.
Alcohol counts as your Complex Carb at that meal. Beyond 2 drinks, it is a Treat.
