How to Make Sugar-Free BBQ Sauce.

A ceramic bowl with barbecue sauce and a spoon

Serves 10–12 · Prep: 5 min · Cook: 10 min

Make It

  1. Add ½ cup unsweetened ketchup, 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 Tbsp coconut aminos, 1 tsp smoked paprika, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp onion powder, ¼ tsp chili powder, and a pinch of sea salt to a small saucepan.

  2. Whisk to combine.

  3. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat.

  4. Cook 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.

  5. Taste and adjust the vinegar, spices or salt. Let cool before storing.

Notes

  • Check your ketchup. Most brands carry added sugar or high fructose corn syrup, so look for one with none.

  • Smoked paprika is what makes it taste like barbecue rather than spiced ketchup. Regular paprika will not do it.

  • Brush it on chicken or meatballs in the last few minutes of cooking, so the sugars in the tomato do not burn.

  • 1 serving = 2 Tbsp.
